BG3 Paladin Build Guide: Best Oath, Stats, Feats & Gear for Beginners
Complete BG3 Paladin build guide. Best oath for beginners, optimal stats, feat progression, best gear, and combat strategy for Oath of Vengeance Paladins.
Why Paladin Is Great for Beginners
Paladins combine heavy armor, self-healing, and the highest burst damage in the game (Divine Smite). You’re hard to kill AND you hit like a truck. The only complexity is managing spell slots for Smites.
Best Build: Oath of Vengeance Paladin

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Paladin oath is best for beginners?
Oath of Vengeance. Vow of Enmity gives you Advantage against one enemy per short rest — this alone makes it the strongest Paladin subclass. Oath of Devotion is second-best but less flexible. Oath of the Ancients is best for support/healing playstyles.
Should Paladins use spell slots for spells or Divine Smite?
Divine Smite, almost always. Use spell slots for Bless at the start of combat, then save every other slot for Smites. Only Smite when you confirm a Critical Hit — Smite dice double on crits, dealing massive burst damage.
