Baldur’s Gate 3 gives you unusually generous saving options compared to most modern games. You can save at virtually any moment — during exploration, mid-combat, in the middle of a dialogue, and even during enemy turns. This flexibility is intentional, encouraging experimentation and making the game accessible across its wide range of difficulty options.

Quicksave (F5 on PC): The fastest way to save. Press F5 and the game instantly creates a quicksave file. There is no confirmation prompt, making it ideal for frequent saving before risky decisions. On console, open the radial menu (R2 on PlayStation, RT on Xbox) and press the quicksave button (Triangle on PS, Y on Xbox).

Quickload (F8 on PC): Loads your most recent save instantly. Useful for undoing a disastrous combat round or re-rolling a failed dialogue check. Be aware that F8 is easy to press accidentally in the heat of combat, but the game does briefly flash a “loading” confirmation.

Manual Save: Open the pause menu (Escape on PC, Start/Menu button on console), select “Save Game,” and create a named save. Named saves persist indefinitely, unlike autosaves and quicksaves which are overwritten on a rolling basis.

Autosave: The game autosaves automatically at specific trigger points: when you enter a new region, before major story encounters, when you approach certain boss arenas, and periodically during exploration (roughly every 15-20 minutes). Autosave slots are limited — the game keeps around 10-15 autosaves before overwriting the oldest ones.

Honour Mode Saving: Honour Mode changes saving fundamentally. You get a single save slot, and the game saves whenever anyone in the party goes down, whenever you quit, and at key story moments. You cannot manually reload to undo decisions. If your full party dies, the save is deleted unless you choose to continue in a non-Honour “Dishonour” mode where achievements are disabled.

Managing Save Files

BG3 save files are large — they can exceed 50 MB each for late-game saves due to the amount of world state being tracked. A playthrough with hundreds of saves can consume tens of gigabytes of storage. Larian recommends limiting the number of autosaves and quicksaves in the gameplay settings menu. You can set the maximum number of autosaves (default: 15) and quicksaves (default: 15) independently.

To delete old saves: open the “Load Game” menu from the main menu or pause menu, and delete unwanted saves individually. There is no bulk-delete option, unfortunately.

Cross-Save and Cloud Saves

Larian accounts support cross-save functionality. Enable cross-save in the gameplay settings and your five most recent saves will sync across platforms — PC, PS5, and Xbox. This requires an active internet connection and a linked Larian account. Note that cross-saves are limited to five slots total across platforms, so only your most recent saves transfer.

Steam Cloud saves work automatically for Steam users. GOG Galaxy provides cloud saves for GOG users. Console users get cloud saves through PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live.

Strategic Saving Tips

Save before every dialogue with a prominent NPC. Persuasion, Deception, and Intimidation checks can dramatically alter quest outcomes, and a failed roll might lock you out of content. Saving before difficult skill checks — lockpicking a DC 30 chest, for example — lets you retry without burning through Thieves’ Tools.

Save at the start of major combat encounters. Some fights have mechanics that are not immediately obvious, and losing an hour of combat progress because you did not understand a boss mechanic is frustrating.

Quick Tips

• Press F5 habitually before dialogues, chests, and suspicious-looking areas.
• Set your max autosaves and quicksaves to 5-10 if storage space is a concern.
• Periodically delete old saves from the Load Game menu to keep your save list navigable.
• Enable cross-save only if you actively play on multiple platforms — it can slow down the save process.
• In Honour Mode, you can still back up your save file manually outside the game (on PC) by copying the save folder from AppData/Local/Larian Studios.
• The game keeps a “Story” autosave at the start of each act that is not overwritten, giving you a fallback to replay from major story milestones.
