Why Wizard Is Harder for Beginners

Wizards have the lowest HP (d6 hit die) and no armor proficiency. You’re squishy. Positioning and spell management are critical. If you’re brand new to BG3, start with Fighter. If you want a spellcaster, Cleric is more forgiving.

INT 17 = primary stat. CON 16 = survival. DEX 14 = initiative + some AC with Mage Armor.

Feats

• Level 4: +2 INT
• Level 8: War Caster (advantage on concentration saves)
• Level 12: Alert (+5 initiative) or +2 INT to 20

Combat Strategy

1. Pre-cast Mage Armor after every long rest
2. Start combat with a concentration spell (Haste on your Fighter, or Wall of Fire as zone control)
3. Follow up with Fireball on grouped enemies
4. Use Shield as a reaction when attacked (don’t hoard level 1 slots)
5. Misty Step to reposition if enemies get close

Best Gear

• Staff: Melf’s First Staff (Act 1) → Markoheshkir (Act 3)
• Armor: Mage Armor spell. Try to get Elven Chain for medium armor proficiency without multiclassing
• Amulet: Amulet of Misty Step → Amulet of Greater Health (Act 3)
