The Darkvision Rule
If your race doesn’t have Darkvision (Human, Halfling, Githyanki*, Dragonborn): you have Disadvantage on attacks in darkness. 70% of BG3 is dark or dimly lit. Always pick a race with Darkvision for your first playthrough.
*Githyanki have Astral Knowledge, not Darkvision.

Does race matter in BG3?
Less than in tabletop D&D. Racial ability bonuses are flexible — you can assign +2/+1 anywhere. What matters are racial features: Darkvision (70% of the game is dark), resistances, free spells, and movement speed.
