Cazador’s Palace: How to Enter

Located in the Lower City (northwest section). Enter through the main gate (the guards invite Astarion in). Alternatively, climb the exterior walls. Inside: navigate through the ballroom, kennels, and guest rooms to reach the ritual chamber.

Boss Strategy: Cazador Szarr

Cazador is a powerful vampire lord with:

  • 300+ HP
  • Legendary Action: Misty Escape (teleports away when hit)
  • Ritual: Drains life from 7 vampire spawn (including Astarion if he’s captured)

Key Mechanics

  1. Astarion will be captured: At the start, Cazador pulls Astarion into the ritual. Use a Bonus Action to free him (Help action on his ritual circle).
  2. Daylight spell destroys Cazador: Cast Daylight (level 3 Cleric spell) on Cazador’s platform. He takes 20 radiant damage per turn and has Disadvantage on attacks while in sunlight.
  3. Kill the other spawn first: They channel energy to Cazador. Use Spirit Guardians or AoE spells to clear them.
  4. Push Cazador off ledges: The arena has multiple levels. Shove him off for fall damage + prone.
  • Shadowheart: Daylight, Spirit Guardians, Turn Undead, Healing
  • Astarion: Ranged damage from the upper platforms
  • Lae’zel/Karlach: Melee burst on Cazador
  • You: Whatever role you fill

The Ritual Choice

After defeating Cazador, Astarion faces his choice:

  • Ascend: Astarion completes the ritual, killing 7,000 spawn. He gains massive power but becomes cruel, arrogant, and emotionally hollow.
  • Spare them: Astarion rejects the ritual. He remains a vampire spawn but keeps his humanity. “You were enough all along.”

The spawn (including the Gur children and Sebastian) are freed or killed based on your choice.

Loot

  • Rhapsody (legendary dagger): +1 to attack, damage, spell DC per kill (max +3)
  • Woe (legendary quarterstaff): +1 spell DC, bonus necrotic damage
  • Cazador’s signet ring and various vampire-themed items

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I let Astarion ascend?

No (for a good playthrough). Ascending kills 7,000 vampire spawn and corrupts Astarion — he becomes power-hungry and cruel. Sparing them and convincing Astarion he's enough as he is leads to his best character development and ending.

Can I beat Cazador without Astarion in the party?

Yes, but you miss the full story. Bring Astarion for the best narrative experience. If you don't bring him, the ritual proceeds off-screen and the outcome is less satisfying.
