BG3 Gale Companion Quest Guide: Wizard of Waterdeep Complete Walkthrough

Act 1: The Hungry Wizard

1. Recruit Gale from the Roadside Cliffs waypoint (pull him out of the malfunctioning portal)
2. Gale needs to consume magic items to stabilize the Netherese Orb in his chest. He’ll ask for 3 items total. Give him cheap magic items (Ring of Colour Spray, Komira’s Locket, Idol of Silvanus — or any cheap +1 gear)
3. If you refuse to feed him, he leaves permanently
4. Meet Elminster at the Mountain Pass — he delivers Mystra’s message: Gale must sacrifice himself to destroy the Absolute

Act 2: Elminster’s Message

Elminster appears and delivers Mystra’s command: Gale should detonate the Netherese Orb at the right moment, destroying the Absolute (and himself). Gale struggles with this. Support him emotionally.

Act 3: The Crown of Karsus

Visit Sorcerous Sundries in the Lower City. Talk to Lorroakan. Find the Annals of Karsus in the vault (lower level). This reveals the Crown’s true nature. Gale’s choice crystallizes:

• Seek Mystra’s Forgiveness: Return the Crown to Mystra. Gale is freed from the Orb and becomes a professor.
• Reclaim the Crown: Challenge Mystra. Gale becomes a god (but loses his humanity). Dangerous, arrogant path.
• Sacrifice: Detonate the Orb during the final battle (avoids the Netherbrain fight entirely but Gale dies)

Best ending: Return the Crown. Gale teaches at Blackstaff Academy, content and at peace. Mystra forgives him.
