Gale Romance Flowchart: Act 1 Weave scene → Act 2 Elminster support → Act 3 boat scene → Ending choice (Professor or God)

Gale Romance Overview

Gale’s romance is the most classically romantic in BG3 — poetic, vulnerable, and deeply emotional. He’s a wizard who was Mystra’s chosen and lover, carrying a magical bomb in his chest. His romance is about teaching him he’s worthy of love beyond his magic.

Key stats: Recruit in Act 1 (Roadside Cliffs). Feed him 3 magic items. Romance scenes trigger at camp during long rests.

Act 1: The Weave Scene

Building Approval

  • Give him magic items without complaint (he needs 3 total)
  • Be intellectually curious. Show interest in his stories about Waterdeep
  • Pet Tara (his tressym familiar) when she visits camp
  • Avoid unnecessary violence. Gale appreciates diplomacy

The Weave Scene (Critical)

At camp: Gale offers to teach you a bit of magic. He channels the Weave. Choose:

  • “Imagine walking hand-in-hand with him” → Romantic. Initiates the romance.
  • “Imagine kissing him” → More direct. Also initiates.
  • “Imagine a good meal” or hostile options → Romance path closes.

After the scene: talk to him at the tiefling party. He’s poetic and romantic. Choose the flirtatious dialogue.

Act 2: The Sacrifice

Elminster’s Visit

Elminster delivers Mystra’s command: Gale must sacrifice himself, detonating the Netherese Orb to destroy the Absolute. Gale spirals. He’s being asked to die by the goddess who discarded him.

Romance dialogue options that matter:

  • “I don’t want you to die. I want you to stay with me.”
  • “You’re more than a weapon, Gale.”
  • Support him emotionally. Don’t tell him to follow Mystra’s orders.

Act 3: The Boat Scene

Gale takes you on a boat ride under the stars. He conjures an aurora using his magic. This is his most romantic scene — the equivalent of Shadowheart’s wine on the cliff or Karlach’s date.

Gale Romance: The boat scene under an aurora in Baldur's Gate — Gale's most romantic moment

Key dialogue: He tells you he loves you. Say it back. He talks about his fears — dying, Mystra, the Orb. Reassure him. Tell him you want a future with him.

The Ending Choice

Gale faces his final decision about the Crown of Karsus:

Option 1: Return the Crown to Mystra (Best Romance Ending)

Gale returns the Crown. Mystra forgives him. The Orb is removed. In the epilogue: he proposes marriage. He’s a professor at Blackstaff Academy in Waterdeep. You’re together. Happily ever after.

Option 2: Reclaim the Crown — Become a God

Gale challenges Mystra for godhood. If he wins: he becomes the God of Ambition. But the romance changes — he sees you as a follower, not a partner. Less satisfying for a love story.

Recommendation: Return the Crown. Professor Gale with a marriage proposal is the objectively best romantic ending.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Gale romance start?

The first opportunity is the Weave scene at camp in Act 1. Gale offers to teach you magic. Choose the romantic option — imagine walking hand-in-hand with him, or kissing him. This initiates the romance. If you miss or reject this scene, the romance path closes.

Does Gale's romance conflict with other companions?

Yes, Gale expects monogamy. If you flirt with multiple companions, he'll eventually ask you to choose. Unlike Shadowheart and Astarion, Gale does not share. If you commit to him, don't romance others past the early flirting stage.
