How to Beat Gortash in BG3: Complete Wyrm's Rock Boss Guide
Complete BG3 Gortash boss guide. How to disable the Steel Watch, navigate Wyrm's Rock Fortress, and defeat Enver Gortash with the best strategy for beginners.
Preparation: Disable the Steel Watch
BEFORE fighting Gortash: go to the Steel Watch Foundry (Lower City docks). Fight through the foundry, disable the central control, then fight the Steel Watch Titan boss. This deactivates all Steel Watch in the city, dramatically reducing Gortash’s defenses.
Wyrm’s Rock Fortress
After disabling the Steel Watch, return to Wyrm’s Rock. Gortash will be in his quarters on the upper floor. His traps are disabled (because you broke the Steel Watch). The fight is much more manageable now.
Gortash Boss Strategy
Gortash has ~250 HP and is supported by traps and grenades.
Key Mechanics
- Grenade Launchers: Gortash throws multiple grenades per turn. Spread out your party to avoid AoE damage.
- Reflectoguard: Gortash can reflect projectiles. Use melee attacks instead of ranged.
- Traps: The room has floor traps. Disarm them or avoid those tiles.
- Bane’s Fist: His melee attack hits hard. Keep your tank on him.
Strategy
- Spread out your party (grenades hurt clusters)
- Cast Hold Person (he has +3 WIS save — not great odds but worth trying)
- Focus Gortash with melee attacks (avoid ranged due to Reflectoguard)
- Use Divine Smite, Action Surge, and high-damage spells
After the Fight
Loot Gortash’s Netherstone (required for the final battle). His body also holds the key to his safe, which contains unique items.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I disable the Steel Watch before fighting Gortash?
Yes, absolutely. If you fight Gortash with the Steel Watch active, the entire Wyrm's Rock Fortress attacks you and the fight is nearly impossible. Disable the Steel Watch at the Foundry first — this makes the Gortash fight manageable.
Can I ally with Gortash?
Yes, you can make a deal with him at the coronation. He offers to share power. However, this locks you out of certain endings. For a good playthrough, don't ally with him — he's responsible for Karlach's suffering and the Absolute plot.
